It was the first hiking area within Spain to use the concept of a network of routes in rural areas, a structure which allows the user to reach any part of the region from anywhere within the region and to move completely freely and safely around the area.
A series of paths has been meticulously selected, using the same methodology and criteria for all the three regions.
The first step was to make an inventory of all the paths in the region and to select the historial routes through path inventories and by talking to locals and people from hiking clubs, etc.
The second step consisted in drawing up a map of tourist, natural and cultural attractions.
The third step was to draw up a map of tourist services.
By laying these maps on top of one another, a points system was established, with a higher score going to the hiking trails that are closest to: tourist establishments; the region's basic services adn; sought-after attractions that are related to culture, heritage, gastronomy, history and the idiosincracy of the lands. In this way, the hiking trails with the highest scores are those that made it into Itinerànnia's basic network of hiking trails.
All this has been possible thanks to the collaboration of town halls, natural parks, who have worked together with one sole objective: to create a network of hiking trails that opens up new opportunities for the area.
As for Itinerànnia, more than 2.500 kilometres of paths have been signposted between Ripollès, Garrotxa and Alt Empordà, providing visitors with a number of excursions depending on the time available, the level of difficulty, the cultural, architectural and natural interests of visitors, etc. In short, anyone can design their own personalised route or the itineraires.
